One world, every scale

Zoom From Kingdom to Village

Every zoom level is its own hex map — world, region, and local detail on one canvas. Paint it once, then drill down to exactly where your party stands.

Zooming from a 24 mi/hex kingdom overview down to a 1 mi/hex local map — each scale its own terrain.

How Scale Levels Work in Hexer

Filling a detail level from the terrain above.

Generate or paint the detail

Zoom into a fresh level and Hexer fills the finer hexes from the terrain above — or start blank and paint by hand.

  • Auto-generate sub-hexes from the parent terrain with natural variation
  • Or start blank — sub-hexes inherit the parent color, you paint the rest
  • Biome bleed blends terrain smoothly at every scale

World-map features projecting onto the detail grid.

Everything projects down

Your rivers, roads, regions, notes, and points of interest follow you down into the detail.

  • Paths, rivers, regions, fog, and point crawl project onto the detail grid automatically
  • Projected items are marked with a map-pin badge
  • Add notes, regions, and point-crawl nodes that live only on a detail map

The only hex tool where one map works at every scale.

Most hex editors give you a single resolution: pick a mile-per-hex and live with it. Hexer lets one world exist at many scales at once — a kingdom overview for travel, a regional map for the current arc, and a local map for the village the party just walked into.

Your rivers, roads, regions, and notes carry across every level automatically, so the world stays consistent as you zoom. Pair it with a point crawl →

Frequently Asked Questions

What are scale levels in Hexer?

Scale levels turn one map into several. Define a sequence like 24 miles per hex, 6, then 1 — and zoom between them. Each level is its own hex grid with its own terrain, features, and labels, so the same world reads as a kingdom overview, a regional map, and a local map.

Is semantic zoom free?

Drilling one scale level deeper than your base map is free. Unlimited scale levels and per-scale export are part of Pro (€4.99/mo).

Do my rivers, roads, and notes carry over when I zoom in?

Yes. Paths, rivers, regions, fog, point crawl, labels, and points of interest project from the world map onto every detail level automatically, marked with a map-pin badge. You can also add notes, regions, and nodes that exist only on a detail map.

Can I generate detailed terrain automatically?

When you first enter a level you choose to generate terrain — Hexer fills the finer hexes from the parent terrain with natural variation, and points of interest like cities expand into hamlets, bridges, and roads with auto-generated names — or start blank and paint it yourself.

Can players zoom between scales in the shared view?

Yes. The live shared view supports the same zoom-through, with projection and fog inheritance, so players can move from the world map down to local detail as they explore.
